PERSONAL STATEMENT
My work deals with varied experiences of intimacy and solitude. I intend to create an ambiguous serenity or powerful sense of presence, touching on an almost religious aura.
I use strong, pure, natural light or vivid colourful artificial light with movement to abstract the subject, capturing varying levels of abstraction in photographs and film stills. Using this as my source material I paint a photorealistic interpretation intending to convey an energy and radiance contained within the confines of the canvas, producing panels of light, colour, intrigue and overall beauty.
I experiment with the relationships between the figure and the environment and the viewer and the painting, exploring different perceptions of reality. In much of my work I aim to bring a fusion between fore and background, using the light to distort and erode the figure, giving the light a sense of form and the figure less definition, creating an equality between the elements. Contrastingly, in a number of my works, I distort the background to create a distinct separation of the figure from its environment, creating a sense of isolation. In doing so, engaging the viewer and generating an intimacy with the subject.
