Born Glasgow 1956. In 1973 Steve attended Carlisle Art College, where upon graduating he moved to London where he worked for a number of publications including Vogue. Steve's background in photography can be seen through his expert compositions, carefully crafted to convey his sense of humour and wit. The industrial, muted colour backgrounds allow the select highlights of bright colour to capture the viewers' attention, and emphasize the humour within each work. Steve Johnston's incredible artistic talent allows him to masterfully juxtapose realistically textured city based backgrounds with bright objects and symbols to create narrative. This narrative is not obvious, but as each viewer interprets these signs for themselves a dialogue is created between artist and audience. The artist manages to convey a hopeful optimism through his insightful, romantic, and wistful commentary. Johnston's paintings are clever, often referencing modern art and pop culture and resonating with the audience long after the first viewing.
