Walter now works as an artist, producing figurative studies in both clay and paint. Sculptural pieces are usually produced in limited edition, using slip-casting techniques. These figures, varying from a few inches in height to life size, are glazed using raku fired glazes or stoneware bronze-like glazes. Paintings are oil on canvas, a favourite subject being the “draped nude” where figure studies are combined with carefully observed fabrics. In sculpture he likes to leave the mark of the finger in the clay and in paint leaves a fairly painterly brushstroke, in both instances showing the making process while at the same time producing a faithful realism.
