Graduating from the Edinburgh College of Art in 1996, Alec Galloway is now the Head of Architectural Glass at the college. He works as a manager and is the proprietor at Cara Glass as well as originally crafting these magnificent stained glass creations. Far removed from a traditional concept of stained glass his work demonstrates a fantastic display of silver stained pains alongside blocks of pop-art-esque shapes. He manages to capture both history and the modern world with his vast array of medieval patterns that create an intoxicatedly dynamic square of installation. As a historical glass restorer Alec collects and finds much of the glass used in these pieces throughout his many conservation jobs. Whilst in keeping with a traditional technical approach to staining glass, Alec produces glass in explorative way, expressing collage through a collection of different media fused together. Each piece is fantastically unique, and brings together both antique methods of glass staining and traditional methods of painting, with contemporary culture. The juxtaposition of slides depicting religious interiors alongside old fragments of stained glass seems a perfect parade of drama and dialogue, all in one. Alec's work is inspired by many painters, one being the great Cornish painter Peter Lanyon who, like Alec wanted to capture the essence of history in a single stroke. He can capture the spirit and immediacy of a piece of music, an environment or emotion through the assembly of cut glass, and the end result is exciting, intriguing and truly unique. "To describe a mile of history in a gesture"
