Collection: Esther Douglas

Esther Douglas is a figurative painter and printmaker, and recent graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. Her practice is centred around being curious in the stories that surround her. Paintings begin as drawings scribbled in notebooks, made out and about in the city of Glasgow where she lives. Documenting the people and places around her in a sketchbook is a way for her to pause with moments that are often overlooked, and beauty that can be missed because of its familiarity. Drawing is a way to navigate the world. These sometimes get worked up into larger scale oil paintings on canvas, where the drawn line is still important, alongside thicker impasto marks layered up on the surface. Printmaking is a method that allows Esther to build up layers iteratively on a surface, mimicking her method of drawing, in attempt to capture some of the textures seen in her surroundings. In these moments of observed life captured in the pieces, Esther hopes that we might slow down, look for a little bit longer and notice more of the world around us.
