Stephen Smith

Based in Milngavie, Glasgow, Stephen Smith is a contemporary Scottish landscape painter working in oils, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Stephen has continued to produce his own work whilst also spending most of his career teaching. Stephen is an artist member of the Paisley Art Institute, and has exhibited and sold work through a number of duo and group exhibitions including RSW, PAI, RGI, Society of Scottish Artists and Aberdeen Artist Society’s annual exhibitions.

“I aim to create atmosphere in my work through colour, mark making, texture and composition. I am always trying to use paint in different ways and I always have several pieces on the go at any one time, experimenting with media and the visual elements is always important to me. Paintings are finished when they communicate something that is beyond the obvious.

“The physical act of painting and mark making begins consciously but the painting is never predictable.” Stephen finds he can get lost in the process of painting and his work will often alter and change as a result of what the landscape gives him during this process.
