Working in oils, John paints landscapes and seascapes - mainly around Scotland. The Ayrshire coast, with its expansive shoreline, provides an unlimited source of inspiration. He is interested in the quality of light and colour in the Scottish landscape, particularly the sky, which often dominates his paintings.
